Oakwell Hall and country park is situated in Birstal and already caters for mountain bikers in the form of a permissive rideway that goes around the site. The ranger team and Cliffe Houses outdoor team had been discussing the development of a purpose built trail in an underused area of woodland. A successful funding bid was put into the Better Homes project to develop community areas, and the bike trail was a go!!
The proposed trail will be a blue graded, 1.5km route that will involve some small/short climbs and some down hill sections with rollers, berms and maybe the odd table top!! The idea is to have a short trail that can be sessioned over and over again, or ridden as part of a longer ride out. It will cater for riders of all abilities – Kids on balance bikes, new riders just starting out and experienced riders, all wanting just to ride bikes and then go for coffee and cake in the on site café.
Ride Kirklees got involved with the trail from the start, and have been instrumental in looking at the best route for the trail and what features we would like to be included. A few construction companies have been in to give their opinions and a costing for the trail. At the moment, the funding that has been granted won’t cover the build of the whole trail, so further bids are in the application process – fingers crossed they get accepted!!
Needless to say the trail will be getting built and it may need some hands on help from the Ride Kirklees team. Updates to come as soon as they happen, so keep an eye out……
