Colne valley route 1

Start at the Handmade bakery in Slaithwaite on the Huddersfield narrow canal and head out away from the village towards Marsden and the Standedge tunnel visitor center.

When you reach tunnel end, head through the car park onto waters road and keep straight ahead till you reach a fork in the road. Turn left up the hill towards Manchester road (A62). Turn right onto Manchester road and skirt along the bottom of Pule hill. Continue straight ahead to Burn clough reservoir car park. Enter the car park and take the trail left up the hill and onto the National trust owned moor. Descend on the trail past Redbrook reservoir and bear left to ford a small stream. Continue straight ahead towards the road.

At the road junction, cross over into a small car park and take the trail up towards the small disused quarry. Keep right and follow the single track (Rollercoaster on strava) to join a track. Turn right and onto Mount road, and enjoy the fast road descent towards Marsden.

 

As you pass the golf club, there is a bus turning circle on your left and just opposite is a short bit of single track heading past a park and on to Butterley reservoir. After crossing the reservoir, turn left up Wessenden valley.

At the top of Wessenden valley, turn right onto Wessenden head road, then left onto Greenfield road. (Stopping for a brew at the roadside van) Look out for a sharp right turn onto Nether lane, and follow it all the way down past the shooting lodge to the road.

Turn left onto Acres lane and continue up to rejoin Greenfield road. Turn right and head past the Huntsman Inn, then left onto Harden hill road for a descent into Meltham. Turn left onto Holmfirth road, and continue into Meltham village.

After the main cross roads, turn left onto mill moor road, and continue straight ahead to join a bridleway. Keep straight ahead through the gate and bear right to cross the 2 streams. Head up past the Yorkshire water buildings and follow the track down to the 2 gates. Go through the left hand gate and follow the bridleway up to the track (leading to Deerhill) Turn right and head down the track to join Slaithwaite road.

Turn left onto Slaithwaite road and keep straight ahead. Follow the road around the sharp left hand bend, and turn right onto Varley road. Head straight down the hill until you come to Manchester road. Cross straight over and down into the village for a pint, coffee and some sustenance.
